Research Notes on Prostatectomy
There are several ways that the prostate can be taken out. A common treatment is to have a surgical operation to remove a part of the prostate gland and tissue or the entire prostate. The procedure is fairly safe, but it does have some risks and complications as most surgeries do. In order to avoid developing this cancer, men must have regular screening examinations. The most common signs and symptoms of prostate cancer are an enlarged prostate, trouble urinating, and discomfort in the pelvic area.
Fast Facts
- Prostate cancer is the second leading cause of cancer-related death in men.
- The surgery is performed by an urologist.
- The surgery usually takes several hours.
- Patients normally stay in the hospital for days following the procedure.
- Erectile dysfunction is a risk after the surgical procedure.
- Urinary incontinence and damage to the urethra and rectum is another risk.
- Outpatient recovery will require follow up visits and tests.
- Some men may need later another procedure to remove new tumors and tissue.
