Research Notes on Prostate Cancer Statistics
Prostate cancer is the most common cancer in American men and the second leading cause of cancer death in American. The American Cancer Society predicts 186,320 new cases will be diagnosed in 2008 and an estimated 28,860 men will perish.1
Fast Facts:
- Men with family history of prostate cancer have a higher risk of being diagnosed with the disease.2
- Research suggest diets with high fat and red meat increase risk of prostate cancer; diets high in fruits and vegetables offer some protection.2
- Sixty percent of newly diagnosed cases are age 70 and over.3
- Ranked fifth in causes of death in men over age 45.3
- One in six men will be diagnosed in their lifetime; more than two million diagnosed are still alive today.1
