Research Notes on PSA Test
The PSA (prostate-specific antigen) blood test is a screening test for prostate cancer that can be done quickly and easily in the doctor's office. It measures for prostate-specific antigen -- a protein produced by the cells of the prostate gland. Elevated PSA levels can be caused by prostate cancer.
Fast Facts:
- Prostatitis or BPH will also raise PSA levels.1
- Experts disagree on the usefulness of the PSA test as a screening tool for prostate cancer.2
- Some doctors encourage annual PSA tests after age 50, others feel it should only be done for high-risk men.1
