Research Notes on Progesterone
Progesterone is a hormone made by the body which helps to regulate the menstrual cycle in a woman. Progesterone also serves other functions like regulating the thyroid gland, reducing swelling and inflammation, and aiding in immunity. Progesterone begins to decline with age, leading to menopause. For this reason, many women turn to Hormonal Replacement Therapy (HRT) to alleviate symptoms caused by this decrease. Estrogen and Progesterone are the two hormones replaced through HRT. Progesterone is used along with estrogen in women who still have their uterus. In these women, if taken without progesterone, estrogen increases a woman's risk for cancer of the endometrium (the lining of the uterus).
