Research Notes on Procainamide
Procainamide is an antiarrhythmic medication that is sometimes recommended to treat life-threatening arrhythmia, or abnormal heart beats. It works by blocking irregular electrical impulses within the heart muscle. If your physician prescribes procainamide, take it exactly as directed. Serious side effects that should be reported immediately include: fever, chills, sore throat, unusual bruising, bleeding, muscle aches, stomach pains, chest pain, skin rash, or oral blisters.1
Fast Facts:
- Common, but less serious side effects include: loss of appetite, vomiting, a bitter taste in the mouth, upset stomach, headache, and dizziness.2
- Because there are many drugs that may negatively interact with procainamide, be sure your physician knows all medications you are taking, including over-the-counter and herbal medications.3
- Procainamide is sometimes prescribed by the name brands Pronestyl, Procan SR, and Procanbid.4
