Research Notes on Primary Adrenal Insufficiency


Primary adrenal insufficiency is a rare disease also known as Addison's disease. It occurs when the adrenal glands cannot produce an adequate amount of hormones despite a normal or increased ACTH level .1 Addison's disease affects about 1 in 100,000 people and about 70 percent of reported cases of Addison's disease are caused by autoimmune disorders.2

Fast Facts:

  • Tuberculosis (TB) accounts for about 20 percent of cases of primary adrenal insufficiency in developed countries.3
  • Women with primary adrenal insufficiency who become pregnant are treated with standard replacement therapy.2
  • Most common symptoms are darkening of the skin, muscle and joint pain, gastrointestinal symptoms, and decreased sexual desire in women.1
