Research Notes on Preventive Health Care Costs
Studies have shown that preventing illness can save money in some cases, but add to health care costs in others. Heart disease is an example for which pre-symptom medicine could possibly erase it as a health threat. Extensive screening before a person gets ill could determine if they are at risk for a heart attack. Since the build up of plaque blocks the arteries and causes a heart attack, cleaning the arteries could be a course of action. On the other hand, prevention measures aim at many more people than would ever develop the disease. The economics of preventative health care will continue to be a debated topic among politicians, health care providers, and policy makers.
