Research Notes on Pregnancy Induced Hypertension
Pregnancy induced hypertension (PIH) is a condition that occurs in the second half of some pregnancies. The symptoms of PIH are high blood pressure, swelling, and an excess of protein in the urine. PIH can reduce the amount of blood that travels to the placenta which can result in low birth weight of the baby. If the fetus is developed enough, the best treatment option for PIH is delivery. If it is too early for delivery, bed rest or high blood pressure medications may be possible treatment options.1
Fast Facts:
- PIH occurs in up to 8% of all pregnancies.2
- Other names for PIH are toxemia or preeclampsia.2
- First time pregnancies account for about 70% of all cases of PIH.3
