Research Notes on Pregnancy Headaches

Headaches are common during pregnancy. They are more common during the first trimester. It is believed to be caused by changes in hormone levels and an increase in blood volume and circulation. During the second trimester, the headaches will sometimes disappear, because the body becomes used to the hormonal changes. During the third trimester, the headaches are caused more by posture and tension from carrying the extra weight from the pregnancy.1

Fast Facts:

  • Headaches during pregnancy should be evaluated by a physician.
  • Your physician may recommend one or more treatments for the headaches, which include lifestyle changes, medications or alternative treatments.2
