Research Notes on Prednisone and Pregnancy

Prednisone is is a synthetic corticosteroid drug, that is considered pregnancy category B or C.1 Corticosteroids are known to cross the placenta to the fetus, however, prednisone is less likely to cross the placenta than other corticosteroids.2 No large, carefully designed studies have been done on prednisone and pregnant women,1 but it is believed that prednisone use in the first trimester may increase the risk of cleft palate or other similar birth defects.2
