Research Notes on Postpartum Preeclampsia


Postpartum preeclampsia is a rare condition when preeclampsia continues after childbirth.1 Preeclampsia causes high blood pressure and excess protein in your urine after twenty weeks of pregnancy.2 It often causes only small increases in blood pressure. If left untreated preeclampsia can lead to serious and fatal complications for you and your child.2 The exact cause of preeclampsia is unknown, but some possible causes include diet, genes, blood vessel problems, and autoimmune disorders.

  • Preeclampsia may occur up to six weeks after childbirth.3
  • Symptoms of postpartum preeclampsia include high blood pressure, headaches, vision problems, a decrease in the amount of urine produced, and a low amount of blood-clotting cells (platelets).1
  • Treatment for postpartum preeclampsia depends on the seriousness of the symptoms, and may include blood pressure medication, anti-seizure medication, steroids, blood transfusion, or surgery.1
  • Preeclampsia is most seen in first time pregnancies, pregnant teens, and women over 40.4
