Postpartum care encompasses management of the mother, newborn, and infant during the postpartal period. This period usually is considered to be the six-week period after childbirth or until the reproductive organs return to their normal size. The physical and emotional care a woman receives during the postpartum period can influence her for the remainder of her life.

Fast Facts:

  • Unless you have had a cesarean delivery, difficult birth or pregnancy complication, you can usually resume moderate exercise once you feel up to it.
  • A postpartum mother may suffer from constipation or hemorrhoids.
  • About 50% of postpartum mothers experience the baby blues. 10-20% of new mothers will experience postpartum depression
