Postherpetic neuralgia is a complication of herpes zoster. Shingles (also known as herpes zoster) is a skin rash, patch, or a line of blisters that can be extremely painful. Postherpetic neuralgia is a viral infection of the nerves. Shingles is an acute infection caused by a familiar childhood foe, chicken pox.

  • Postherpetic neuralgia pain is the pain after shingles.
  • The rash arises on the skin over a nerve in the shape of a band.
  • The acute phase lasts until the lesions are healed, usually several weeks after the onset of the rash.
  • The most common symptoms of postherpetic neuralgia are: burning, throbbing, aching, stabbing or shooting pain.
  • Some common treatments for postherpetic neuralgia include steroids, antidepressants, anticonvulsants, and topical agents.
