Post-traumatic stress disorder, also known as PTSD, is an anxiety disorder which can occur after exposure to an extremely traumatic event.1 The event can happen to the individual, or they may witness it happen to someone else.2 At first, the person responds with acute fear, horror, or helplessness. Later on, the individual develops a response to the event that is characterized by continuously re-experiencing the event. This manifests as avoidance, numbness, and hyperarousal. The result is functional impairment, and significant distress.3
