Research Notes on Postnasal Drip
Postnasal drip (PND), also known as chronic upper airway cough syndrome, is an accumulation of mucus in the back of the throat and nose. This can give the sensation of something dripping down the back of the throat.1 Rhinitis, laryngopharyngeal acid reflux, and sinusitis may all cause postnasal drip.2
Fast Facts:
- Constant swallowing, clearing of the throat, difficulty breathing, and spitting mucus are a few symptoms of PND.2
- PND may also be a contributing cause of halitosis.2
- Treatment often includes nasal irrigation (using a bulb syringe or a neti pot) and antibiotics.2
