Research Notes on Polydipsia
Polydipsia is medical terminology for excessive thirst.1 Usually, a person exhibiting signs of polydipsia consumes large amounts of water, but it can mean any type of fluid.1 Polydipsia can be a sign of diabetes, kidney disease, liver disease, urinary tract infection or several other conditions.2 It is important to discuss episodes of polydipsia with a physician so that a complete evaluation can be performed.
Fast Facts:
- A symptom of disease, not a cause of disease.1
- Consumption of large amounts of water can lead to water intoxification, a potentially fatal condition.1
- Caffeine acts as a diuretic and may lead to an increase in thirst.1
