Research Notes on Pollen
Pollen is a fine powder that produces the sperm cells of most seed plants. Used in reproduction, many plants disperse pollen in an airborne form. Seasonal allergic rhinitis (hay fever) affects about 20-40 million Americans during flowering periods when plants are shedding their pollen.1
Fast Facts:
- Hay fever is an allergy to specific airborne particles.2
- These allergens may be pollen, mold, pet dander, or dust.2
- Symptoms of hay fever are a runny nose, sneezing, or itching eyes.2
- Most pollen allergies are caused by ragweed plants, but they can also be caused by birch trees, oak trees, hickory trees, pecan trees, and summer grasses.2
