Research Notes on Poke
Poke is a herb with many names, including: poke root, poke weed, Virginian poke, pigeon berry, inkweed, skoke, inkberry, grubroot, phytolacca berry, American spinach, crowberry, pocan and many others.1 The plant is native to North America and is found throughout the South. It is known to stimulate the metabolism, detoxify the body, and is especially helpful in boosting the immune system.2
Fast Facts:
- The leaves of the young plant can be boiled in water three times (with water discarded after each session), seasoned and eaten in the same manner as spinach.3
- A poke root tincture can be used to treat sore throats, strep throat, infected gums, swollen lymph glands and breast cysts. Some studies are reporting positive results in treating HIV, cancer and lymphoma!3
- The entire poke plant can be considered toxic in the hands of an inexperienced person.3
