Research Notes on Pleural Effusion
Pleural effusion is the buildup of fluid between the pleura, which are the membranes that wrap around the outside of your lungs and line the inside of your chest cavity. Too much fluid between the pleura will press against your lungs and can cause them to collapse.1 This excess fluid can be the result of infection, inflammation, heart failure, pancreatitis, or cancer.2
Fast Facts:
- You normally have about 4 teaspoons of fluid between your pleura.3
- Some of the symptoms are shortness of breath, dry cough, and chest pain.4
- Treatment depends on the cause; but may include medication, drainage of the fluid and possible surgery.4
