Research Notes on Plaque Psoriasis Treatment

There are many types of treatment for plaque psoriasis including the use of steroids, drugs that suppress the immune system, phototherapy, topical creams and ointments, or even natural sunlight.1 Plaque psoriasis, also known as psoriasis vulgaris, is the most prevalent form of the disease and occurs in about 80 percent of all psoriasis cases.2 This form of psoriasis is characterized by raised, inflamed, red lesions covered by silvery white scales, and is typically found on the elbows, knees, scalp and lower back.2

Fast Facts:

  • Outpatient topical therapy is the first-line approach in the treatment of plaque psoriasis with a number of topical treatments being available.3
  • Cortisone creams can reduce the itching of mild psoriasis and are available without a prescription.4
  • Phototherapy is used only in the presence of extensive and widespread disease.3
  • Many over-the-counter products may be helpful in treating psoriasis. The moisturizing properties of aloe vera, neem oil, emu oil, jojoba, products containing oat derivatives, witch hazel, tea tree oil, capsaicin, and evening primrose oil have all been shown to be effective treatment options.5
