Research Notes on Arterial Plaque
Arterial plaque is a build up of substance in the walls of the arteries. It is comprised of fat, cholesterol, calcium, and other substances found in the blood. A condition called atherosclerosis may occur with the build up of arterial plaque. Atherosclerosis can cause a reduction in oxygen preventing the heart from functioning properly.1

- Arterial plaque can cause a partial blockage or complete blockage of the blood flow.2
- Arterial plaque is a contributing cause to coronary heart disease.1
- Treatment options include diet, exercise, cholesterol-lowering drugs, and reducing the risk factors of high cholesterol and hypertension.3
