In studies, plant sterols have been effective in reducing the risk of heart disease, stomach cancer, colon cancer, breast cancer, and prostate cancer.1 Found in plant-based foods and dietary supplements, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved plant sterols in foods such as margarine, mayonnaise, orange juice, beverages, and snack foods.2 Other foods that contain plant sterols include fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds, and breakfast cereals.1

Fast Facts:

  • Using approximately two to three grams daily of plant sterols is suggested for maximum benefit.1
  • To obtain two grams of plant sterols from vegetables, approximately one-hundred pounds would need to be consumed.2
  • Plant sterols may help relieve enlarged prostate symptoms but has shown no effectiveness in shrinking the prostate.3
  • Other purported uses that have not been evaluated or tested include treating gallstones, enhancing sexual performance, boosting immune system, treating common cold and flu, asthma treatment, relieving menopause symptoms, and helping with hair loss.3
