Research Notes on Pipsissewa
Pipsissewa has been used medicinally since before the days of Daniel Boone! The flowering plant has long been known for its diuretic properties, and has even been used in a concoction to ease back pain.1 The flavor of pipsissewa is still enjoyed today as it is a traditional ingredient in root beer.2 When used internally in the form of a tea, pipsissewa is less irritating than uva-ursi.3
Fast Facts:
- Species name is Chimaphila umbellata.
- Freshly bruised leaves may ease the pain of skin blisters, swelling, and rheumatic joints.1
- Has been used in the past to treat gonorrhea.4
