Research Notes on Where Do Pinworms Come From

Pinworms (also refered to as threadworms) come from a roundworm called Enterobius vermicularis.1 These worms can be transmitted from person to person. Female pinworms lay eggs on an individual's skin around their anus. Itching and scratching of the area then leads to the eggs being transferred onto the fingers. The eggs can then be passed by direct contact, or through sharing things like toys, pencils, and food. Eggs can also be deposited on toilet seats, carpets, dust, and dirt.2
