Pinellia is a staple in traditional Chinese medicine.1 Because the raw roots can be toxic, using this herb (also called zhi ban xia or ban xia) should be restricted to those who are trained in proper handling techinques.1 The potential uses for pinellia include the treatment of respiratory disorders such as coughs, asthma and emphysema.2
