Research Notes on Phlebitis Symptoms
Symptoms of phlebitis -- also known as thrombophlebitis -- may include swelling, pain in the affected area, redness of the skin, and warmth over the vein. Tests that may be performed to diagnose phlebitis may include blood coagulation studies, doppler ultrasound, and venography. There are two types of thrombophlebitis: deep vein thrombosis and superficial thrombophlebitis.1

- Medications used include analgesics, antibiotics (when infection is present), anticoagulants, and thrombolytics.2
- Causes may include an injury or a inherited blood-clotting disorder.3
- Phlebitis is a blood clot that forms close to the skin. They tend not to travel to the lungs, unless they move into a deep vein; this is called deep vein thrombosis.4
