Pheromones

Research Notes on Pheromones

Pheromones are chemical signals that elicit a response in humans as well as other mammals and insects.1 Some studies suggest that human beings respond to some chemical signals from other humans.1 Researchers are focusing on the theory of genetic receptors as the carriers of pheromones to the human nose.1

Fast Facts:

  • Biologists refer to pheromones as "smellprints" and suggest that they are as unique as fingerprints.2
  • It is well established that pheromones underlie sexual and other behaviors in animals.2
  • The fragrance industry manufactures synthetic versions of pheromones as "mood enhancers."2
