Research Notes on Phenytoin
Phenytoin is used to treat various types of seizures and convulsions. It is also used to control irregular heartbeat, migraine headaches, and facial nerve pain. Phenytoin works by acting on the brain and central nervous system in the treatment of epilepsy.
Fast Facts:
- Sold under the brand name Dilantin.
- Phenytoin is very effective for preventing partial seizures.
- Phenytoin is a weak acid and has erratic GI absorption.
- Phenytoin may cause a febrile reaction, hypotension (during intravenous infusion), or bradycardia.
- Do not open, crush, or chew the extended-release capsules.
- It is usually taken two or three times a day.
