Research Notes on Phantom Limb Syndrome
Phantom limb syndrome is the perception of feeling after a limb has been amputated. The sensations felt may include pain, warmth, cold, itching, squeezing and burning. Those affected have the sensation that the limb is still attached to the body.1
Fast Facts:
- Occurs in about 50 to 80% of people who have had an amputation.1
- Common experience; especially in the early months and years after the loss of the limb.1
- It is believed to be caused by the brain still receiving messages from the nerves that carried impulses from the missing limb.1
