Research Notes on Pervasive Developmental Disorders
Pervasive development disorders (PDDs) are a group of conditions involving delays in development of basic life skills, particularly the ability to socialize with others and to communicate effectively. The conditions include autism, Asperger's syndrome, childhood disintegrative disorder, Rett's syndrome, and pervasive development disorder not otherwise specified (PDDNOS). They are referred to as "developmental" disorders as they are typically identified in children around 3 years of age.
Fast Facts:
- Also referred to as autism spectrum disorders
- 2–6 per 1,000 (from 1 in 500 to 1 in 150) children have a Pervasive Development Disorder
- Some studies suggest that PDDs are caused by a problem with the nervous system
