Pervasive development disorders (PDDs) are a group of conditions involving delays in development of basic life skills, particularly the ability to socialize with others and to communicate effectively. The conditions include autism, Asperger's syndrome, childhood disintegrative disorder, Rett's syndrome, and pervasive development disorder not otherwise specified (PDDNOS). They are referred to as "developmental" disorders as they are typically identified in children around 3 years of age.
