Research Notes on Personality Disorders
Personality disorders (previously known as character disorders) are a class of mental disorders that affect thinking, behavior, and emotions.1 Approximately 15% of the adult US population are affected by a personality disorder, and some individuals may suffer from more than one. Antisocial personality disorder, histrionic personality disorder, and schizotypal personality disorder are the most commonly diagnosed personality disorders.2

- The American Psychiatric Association defines personality disorders as "an enduring pattern of inner experience and behavior that deviates markedly from the expectations of the culture of the individual who exhibits it."1
- General symptoms may include social isolation, alcohol abuse, drug abuse, emotional outbursts, and frequent mood swings.3
- Treatment typically involves therapy and medication, but each person responds to these disorders and treatment differently.4
