Research Notes on Periwinkle
The periwinkle plant is a medicinal herb that, while effective, is not recommended for inexperienced herbalists to experiment with. Vinblastine and vincristine, both chemotherapy drugs are made from derivatives of the periwinkle plant.1 While the periwinkle plant can be helpful to cancer patients, it can be toxic if ingested.2
Fast Facts:
- A tea or salve made from periwinkle can treat minor skin irritations such as acne.3
- Has been used to treat wasp stings.1
- Was used to cure muscle cramps by wrapping wet leaves around the area as early as 1657.4
