Peritoneal Dialysis

Research Notes on Peritoneal Dialysis

In peritoneal dialysis, a dialysis fluid is entered into the patient’s thin membrane of the abdominal cavity, through the small blood vessels. This membrane, called the peritoneum, is like a big bag that keeps the stomach, intestines, liver, and other organs in place. The dialysis fluid will make water, salts, and the waste products move from the blood into the fluid (also called solution). This process is called dialysis, and means that the peritoneum works as a dialysis filter. As the fluid gets saturated after a while, the solution must be exchanged regularly. ...read more from Wikipedia

Fast Facts:

  • There are two types of peritoneal dialysis: Continuous Ambulatory Peritoneal Dialysis (CAPD), wherein the exchanges are done manually; and Automated Peritoneal Dialysis (APD), wherein it uses a small machine for the fluid exchange.1
  • Peritoneal dialysis is a practical and widespread treatment for kidney failure.2
  • Dialysis helps maintain the blood pressure and proper acid-base balance in the body.3
