Research Notes on Peripheral Nervous System

The body's nervous system is a series of neurons that run from every part of the body to the spinal cord, and finally to the brain. This system allows our bodies to interpret sensory and motor information, as well as influence involuntary organ functions (such as the heart pumping blood). The nervous system is divided into two parts: the central nervous system (CNS) and the peripheral nervous system (PNS).1 The peripheral nervous system is an extension of the central nervous system that monitors limbs and organs.2

Fast Facts:

  • The PNS is not protected by bone, and therefore can be damaged by toxins or mechanical injuries.2
  • Organs connected the PNS include: eyes and ears, muscles, blood vessels, and glands.3
  • The PNS can be divided into the somatic nervous system and autonomic nervous system.1
  • The somatic nervous system connects to skeletal muscles and exterior sensory organs.1
  • The autonomic nervous system controls involuntary muscle function.1
