Research Notes on Peripheral Artery Disease Treatments
Peripheral artery disease (PAD) treatment is aimed at managing symptoms and to stop the progression of atherosclerosis throughout your body. If you smoke, quitting can reduce the progression of the blockage and reduce the risk of complications. If lifestyle changes are not enough, your doctor may prescribe medication. Medicines prescribed in the treatment of PAD may include medications to relieve symptoms, lower cholesterol, control blood sugar, prevent blood clots, and lower blood pressure.1
Fast Facts:
- In some cases, treatment of PAD may include angioplasty and stenting, endarterectomy, or bypass surgery.2
- To increase the distance you can walk pain free, your doctor may recommend regularly walking as part of treatment for PAD.2
- As a last resort in extreme cases, amputation may be necessary if the leg has gangrene and is not salvageable.2
