Research Notes on Peripheral Artery Disease Medications
Medicines used for peripheral artery disease (PAD) are aimed at prevention and treating the symptoms once it occurs.1 Cholesterol-lowering drugs such as statins may be prescribed to slow atherosclerosis, which is the main cause of PAD.2 If you have high blood pressure and diabetes, your doctor may prescribe medications to treat them since they can speed up the development of PAD.1
Fast Facts:
- Your doctor may prescribe medicines such as cilostazol to treat the pain that may accompany PAD.1
- Since PAD reduces the blood flow to your limbs, you may be prescribed medication to prevent blood clots.2
- Medicine is usually prescribed after lifestyle changes have been implemented.
