Research Notes on Peripheral Arterial Disease of the Legs
Peripheral arterial disease (PAD) of the legs is the narrowing or blockage of arteries that carry blood to the legs. Over time plaque can build up inside the arteries. This will reduce the amount of blood flow to the legs. Pain or cramps in the legs when walking, that subside when a person stands still, may indicate PAD.1
Fast Facts:
- Some people do not have any symptoms.1
- An absent or weak pulse in the groin, behind the knee, on the inner ankle or on the top of the foot are signs of PAD.1
- September is National Peripheral Arterial Disease Awareness Month.2
