Penicillin allergy is an allergic reaction that occurs when your body's immune system overreacts to penicillin antibiotics. Your immune system creates antibodies to attack the medication. Reactions can occur such as hives, angioedema, wheezing, coughing, and anaphylaxis. For emergency treatment, people typically get an epinephrine shot. For a mild allergic reaction, symptoms can be controlled with antihistamines.
