Research Notes on Pemetrexed

Pemetrexed is used in conjunction with other chemotherapy medications to treat non-small cell lung cancer and malignant pleural mesothelioma. This medication is in a class of drugs known as antifolate antineoplastic agents. Pemetrexed is available in under the brand name Alimta.1

Fast Facts:

  • Given as an injection, usually once every three weeks.2
  • Side effects include: low blood cell counts (red, white and platelets), nausea, fatigue, anemia, anorexia, rashes, edema and vomiting.3
  • Most doctors recommend taking vitamins such as folic acid and vitamin B12 and a corticosteroid such as dexamethasone (Decadron) to decrease some of the side effects.4
