Research Notes on Paxil and Pregnancy

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has classified Paxil as a pregnancy category D drug. This means that Paxil can pose a risk to the fetus. If the benefit to the mother outweighs the risk to the unborn child, Paxil may still be prescribed during pregnancy.1

Fast Facts:

  • Two early studies have shown that the use of Paxil during the first three months of pregnancy increases the risk of a woman having a child born with heart defects.2
  • If you are taking Paxil and are pregnant or planning on becoming pregnant, do not stop taking your medication without talking to your doctor.2
  • Besides heart defects, babies born to mothers who took Paxil during pregnancy are at risk of life-threatening lung problems.3
