Research Notes on Parathyroid Disease
The parathyroid glands are very tiny glands close to the thyroid gland. Most people have four of them, but some may be missing one or have an extra one. They make a substance called parathyroid hormone (PTH). This controls the levels of calcium and phosphorous in the blood. It also helps create vitamin D and helps to prevent loss of too much calcium in the urine. Malfunctions of these glands can cause three different types of parathyroid disease: parathyroid cancer, hyperparathyroidism (HPT), and hypoparathyroidism.
