Research Notes on Panic Disorder
Panic disorder is characterized by recurrent, unexpected feelings of extreme fear and dread, which can occur with no reason. Many people with panic disorder also suffer from agoraphobia. This is due to the fear of having a panic attack while in public. These are called anticipatory attacks. A diagnosis of panic disorder is considered if two or more panic attacks have occurred along with feelings of increased anxiety for at least one month.1

- Symptoms of panic disorder may include rapid heart rate, sweating, trembling, hyperventilation, hot flashes, chest pain, dizziness, and headache.2
- Treatment may include psychotherapy, cognitive behavioral therapy, and medications.3
- Panic disorder often accompanies depression, alcoholism, and drug abuse.4
