Research Notes on Pancreatic Enzyme Products
Pancreatic enzyme products are of two types: hormonal, or digestive. Some diseases such as distal pancreatectomy, chronic pancreatitis, pancreatic cancer, and cystic fibrosis make it necessary for a person to take a pancreatic enzyme product.1 As of 2004 the Food and Drug Administration began to regulate the production of all over the counter, and physician prescribed, pancreatic enzyme products. This was done to standardize the formulation of each product.2
Fast Facts:
- The Cystic Fibrosis Foundation began receiving "reports of treatment failure" when pharmacists supplied a substitute enzyme other than that ordered by the physician, which led to FDA involvement.3
- Pancrelipase is not for people who are allergic to pigs or pork.4
- 90% of the patients on pancrelipase have cystic fibrosis.4
