Research Notes on Pancreatic Cancer and Life Expectancy

The average life expectancy of people with pancreatic cancer is only 13% at one year. This goes down to less than 4% after five years. When the cancer has spread to other parts of the body, the average life expectancy is only two to six months. Pancreatic cancer overall has a very poor prognosis.1

Fast Facts:

  • In 2008, there were an estimated 35,420 deaths from pancreatic cancer reported in the United States.2
  • About 52% of all pancreatic cancer is diagnosed after the cancer has already metastasized.3
  • Five year survival rates are close to 40% when the cancer is caught early, and surgically removed before it spreads to the lymph nodes.4
