Research Notes on Pancreatic Cancer

Pancreatic cancer is the growth of malignant cells in the pancreas. Signs and symptoms of pancreatic cancer include jaundice, upper abdominal pain and back pain, loss of appetite, and unintentional weight loss. Pancreatic cancer often goes undetected early on because it can grow for some time before symptoms appear.1 Treatment has the best outcome when pancreatic cancer is diagnosed early.2 Fast Facts:

  • The pancreas produces enzymes to help digest food and secretes hormones which help maintain and regulate body sugar levels.
  • Pancreatic cancer may involve exocrine or endocrine tumors, depending on the location of the cells which are affected.3
  • Incidents have dropped in the last 15-25 years, but pancreatic cancer remains the fourth leading cause of cancer death.4
  • Cigarette smoking is the most important avoidable risk factor and causes 20-30% of pancreatic cancers. 5
  • Pancreatic cancer has been linked to the BRCA2 gene and occurs with higher frequency in people of Ashkenazi Jewish descent.2
