Research Notes on Pancreas
The pancreas is a gland in the digestive system which functions as both exocrine (secreting digestive enzymes and pancreatic juices) and endocrine (producing hormones).1 Because the pancreas is such a complex organ with many necessary functions, any injury to the pancreas could be life-threatening.1 Cancer of the pancreas is the fourth leading cause of cancer deaths in the United States.2
Fast Facts:
- Pancreas is approximately six inches long.3
- One of the most important functions is to secrete insulin.3
- Severe abdominal pain, nausea and vomiting, fever, rapid heartbeat and a swollen abdomen all indicate a possible problem with the pancreas.3
