Research Notes on Pain
Pain is an unpleasant sensation produced by a sensory episode of the nervous system.1 There are two main types of pain, acute pain and chronic pain. Acute pain is a temporary pain that comes on quickly, can be severe, and is commonly due to an injury. Chronic pain is a pain that persists for days, months, and even years.2
Fast Facts:
- Pain can be caused by several conditions such as a headache, muscle pain, fibromyalgia, neuropathic pain, trauma, vascular disease, or injuries.3
- Some common treatments for pain include aspirin, acetaminophen, antidepressants, anticonvulsants, ibuprofen, and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs).3
- Pain can cause an individual to also experience anxiousness, irritability, or depression.4
