Research Notes on PMDD Symptoms

Premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD) and premenstrual syndrome (PMS) have similar symptoms. The difference is that the symptoms of PMDD are more severe than those of PMS.1 Symptoms may include mood swings marked by periods of teariness, persistent irritability or anger, sleep problems, low energy, food cravings, tension, anxiety, panic attacks, trouble concentrating, feeling sad or hopeless, and possibly even suicidal thoughts. Physical symptoms such as bloating, breast tenderness, headaches, and joint or muscle pain may also be experienced.2 A diagnosis of PMDD may be made if five or more of these symptoms are experienced for most of the seven days before menstruation and subside within a few days of the start of the menstrual period.1

Fast Facts:

  • Studies have shown that women who have major depression or seasonal affective disorder are likely to experience PMDD.2
  • An estimated 3% to 8% of women are affected by PMDD during their reproductive years.2
  • Symptoms may be severe enough to interfere with relationships, work, and daily activities.1
