Research Notes on PMDD Causes
Premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD) is a condition that occurs about a week before the onset of menstruation. It is a more severe form of another condition called PMS.1 The exact cause of PMDD is still unknown.2

- Believed to be caused by hormonal changes.2
- Studies have possibly linked PMDD to low levels of serotonin.2
- It is also believed that PMDD is inherited.3
