Research Notes on Oysters
Oysters are bivalve mollusks that reside in marine habitats and brackish water.1 Oysters are one of the most nutritionally well-balanced foods that a person could eat.2 They are an excellent source of many vitamins including vitamin A, riboflavin, and thiamin.2 Oysters have been called a natural aphrodisiac due to their nutritional content.3
Fast Facts:
- Oysters use their gills and mantle to breathe like fish.2
- People with impaired immune systems or cancer should not eat raw oysters.2
- Raw oysters may carry bacteria that can be especially harmful to people with chronic liver disease.
